Morgan
Well, thatâs a little disturbing,â Arthur said after Morgan explained that he could sense Bronwyn but that she was extremely distant and not in any clear direction that he could tell.
âYou havenât heard anything from her? Or from those Urghat she had following her?â Issa asked.
âNo. Itâs not surprising with regard to the Urghat, though. Theyâve made themselves scarce since we repelled their invasion. I donât imagine any of them would come around without Bronwyn present to vouch for them.â
âMy people still hunt them on the plains. The hunters in the lodge claim that most Urghat have retreated to the Blue Spines.â Issa said, a slight frown on her face. âI hope Bronwynâs followers arenât among their prey.â
âYeah, I hadnât thought of that. Hopefully, theyâre with her or far from here.â Morgan drummed his fingers on the table. âWell, nothing we can do about it for now. Take heart that sheâs alive. Is there anything you need from us before we travel to Tarnâs? I donât think weâll be gone more than a couple of weeks, but I canât be sure.â
âIf youâre going to Tarnâs Crossing, I have a diplomatic package Iâd like you to bring to their governorâjust some correspondence and some artwork that our artisans want to offer as a gesture of goodwill and thanks.â
âSure, no problem. Everything else going alright?â
âQuite well, actually. Weâve got a burgeoning flock of those sheep-creatures, the bolyo, or something.â
âHolbyis,â Issa said.
âRight, right. Weâve also started up some trade with a few of the local nomad bands. So far, nothing has come to threaten us. Weâve continued to build our arsenal of defensive weapons, though. Boris has figured out a way to make rifled cannon barrels, and theyâre on the verge of making Energy powered projectilesâblack powder may have a very short-lived use for us.â
âThatâs good, I suppose, though I wish it werenât necessary. Still, Iâm not naiveâthere are a lot of hostiles out there, and as our territory expands, we might run into things much worse than Urghat.â Issa nodded along with Morganâs words. âAny word from Olivia?â
âNot a peep, though she thought it might be difficult to communicate with us.â
âRight, hey, hang on a second.â Morgan closed his eyes and concentrated for a minute. âYep, I can feel her. Sheâs south and east of here, quite a lot farther than Tarnâs Crossing. Itâs good to know sheâs alive, though, eh?â
âYes, quite. Thatâs a handy skill, Morgan.â
âWell, it sounds like the council is handling things just fine, though now that weâre out of any immediate crisis, maybe we should see about an election to replace me? Maybe Bronwyn and Olivia, too? I feel bad doing it while theyâre gone, but we did talk about it before everyone left.â
âFor now, the six of us in the colony arenât having any trouble organizing things. If it becomes a problem, we have a quorum and can vote to fill your seats. Your connection to the locals is valuable, though, Morgan, and Iâd rather not have you leave the council for now.
